Mashup is a musical genre which, in its purest form, consists of the combination of the music from one song with the a cappella from another. Ideally, the music and vocals belong to completely different styles/genres generally considered to be incompatible, yet skillfully and artfully combined into a pleasurably euphonic hybrid.
Here I present a selection of the best (and worst) Beatles’s mashups. Enjoy!
Revolved
First ccc’s mashup album. It’s based in Revolver, the best album of all time. In his work, ccc mixes Revolver’s original songs with songs of Madonna, The Jam, Coldplay and many other artists. To know more about this project, visit Revolved.
Cracked Pepper
Second ccc’s mashup album, this one uses Sargent Pepper as base. Like Revolved, Cracked Pepper mixes Beatles’ songs with pop music songs to make new ones. Official website: Cracked Pepper.
Love
Love is a soundtrack compilation album by The Beatles released in November 2006. It features music compiled and remixed for the Cirque du Soleil show of the same name. The album was produced by George Martin and his son Giles Martin, who said, “What people will be hearing on the album is a new experience, a way of re-living the whole Beatles musical lifespan in a very condensed period.”
Due to avoid piracy, this album isn’t available to download.
HATE
In opposition to Love, a brazilian DJ released HATE, another Beatles’ mashup with themselves. If Love celebrates love and peace, HATE celebrates war and violence. It’a another way to see the Beatles’ legacy.
The Grey Album
The Grey Album is an album by Danger Mouse, released in 2004. It uses an a cappella version of rapper Jay-Z’s The Black Album and couples it with instrumentals created from a multitude of unauthorized samples from The Beatles (more commonly known as The White Album). The Grey Album gained notoriety due to the response by EMI in attempting to halt its distribution.
Beatallica
Beatallica is a parodic band that plays music made from combinations of songs of The Beatles and Metallica. A Beatallica song is typically a blend of a Beatles song and a Metallica song with a related title (e.g. “The Thing That Should Not Let It Be”, combining The Beatles’ “Let It Be” and Metallica’s “The Thing That Should Not Be” or “And Justice for All My Loving” combining Metallica’s “And Justice for All” and the Beatles’ “All My Loving”), though sometimes just a Beatles song will be used as a basis with modified lyrics.
Download now the two album realeases of the band, Beatallica and A Garage Dayz Nite.
Complete Beatles in One Hour
To finish this list, something that isn’t a mashup. Complete Beatles in One Hour it’s exactly what the title says: all The Beatles UK LP releases compressed at 800% into a one-hour MP3. It’s very strange, but is very cool.
